Everything You Need to Know About Mound City Little League

Welcome to Mound City Little League! We’re thrilled to have you join our community. Below are answers to frequently asked questions to help you navigate the season with confidence.

Cost to Play

Nothing. Zero. Free.
Mound City has never charged a child to play—and we never will. All funding comes from generous local businesses, sponsors, and individual donors. The only fundraising event we ask players to participate in is the Bowl-a-thon.

Age Eligibility

  • Baseball: Ages 4–12
  • Softball: Ages 7–16

Division Placement & Age Cutoffs

Our registration system automatically places your child in the correct division based on age.

  • Baseball cutoff date: April 30 of the current year
  • Softball cutoff date: January 1 of the current year

Can My 3-Year-Old Play T-Ball?

Possibly. The system won’t allow registration for children under 4, but if a parent is willing to coach, we may approve the exception after a background check. Please attend in-person registration for assistance. Dates are listed on our News page.

Gender Eligibility

  • Softball: Follows girls’ fast-pitch rules; boys may not participate
  • Baseball: Coed; girls are welcome to play

Game Days & Scheduling

Game schedules are finalized after team drafts. Frequency varies by division:

  • Farm & Varsity Baseball: Typically 2–3 games per week
  • Other Divisions: 1–3 games per week

Practice schedules are set by individual coaches. We’ve moved to a flexible scheduling model to better accommodate rainouts and field availability.

Friend Requests

In noncompetitive divisions (Rookies and Coach Pitch), you may request that your child be placed on the same team as a friend. We’ll do our best to honor it. Competitive divisions use a draft system to ensure balanced teams.

Siblings on the Same Team

Yes. Siblings living in the same household will be placed on the same team. In competitive divisions, they are drafted together. This includes biological, step, foster, or other children under the same custody. Cousins or step-siblings not living together may not be grouped unless approved by the MCLL commission.

Season Timeline

  • Start: Practices begin after the April parent meeting; games typically start late April or early May
  • Opening Day: Saturday before Mother’s Day (for Rookies and Coach Pitch)
  • End: Around the Shrine Tournament in late June; may extend into early July due to weather

Equipment Requirements

MCLL provides:

  • Baseball: Hat and jersey
  • Softball: Socks and jersey

Players must provide:

  • Pants, socks, belt (color announced at parent meeting)
  • Cleats (non-metal; any shoes acceptable for Rookies and Coach Pitch)
  • Glove

Optional but recommended:

  • Personal helmet and bat
  • Equipment bag
  • Batting gloves
  • Catcher’s gear (teams are provided one set)
  • Groin protection (mandatory for catchers)

Bat Requirements

Only bats with the “USA” stamp are permitted. Wood bats are also allowed.

Coach Assignments

Coaches are selected by the MCLL governing commission from a pool of volunteers. We encourage parents to consider coaching—it’s a rewarding experience.

Are There Volunteer Opportunities Besides Coaching?

Absolutely. We welcome help with concessions, field prep, scorekeeping, fundraising, and event planning. Contact any commissioner to get involved.

Birth Certificate & Age Verification

Age must be verified by a commissioner at the parent meeting or in-person registration. Acceptable documents include:

  • Birth certificate
  • Passport
  • Medical card with date of birth
  • Other official government documents

For tournament play, a birth certificate must be available for review.

What Is the Bowl-a-thon?

Our annual Bowl-a-thon is a fun, free event where players bowl for an hour to raise funds for the league. Each child is encouraged to raise at least $25. Those who raise $100 or more receive special recognition during the season and at Opening Day.

What Is the Rainout Policy?

If games are canceled due to weather, we’ll update our Facebook page and notify coaches. Make-up games will be scheduled as field space allows.

Lightning & Weather Delays

If lightning is detected:

  • A PA announcement will initiate a 30-minute delay
  • Players must remain in dugouts
  • Spectators should seek shelter under covered seating, near the clubhouse, or in vehicles
  • Play resumes if lightning clears after the delay

Skills Assessment

Used for competitive division drafts to ensure balanced teams. Each player should attend one assessment. If you miss the main event, a makeup session is held on draft day. All children play regardless of skill level. Rookies and Coach Pitch divisions do not require assessments.

What Happens If My Child Misses a Game?

We understand that life happens. Please notify your coach as early as possible. Repeated absences may affect playing time in competitive divisions, but all players remain eligible to participate.

Donations, Sponsorships & Advertising

To donate, sponsor a team, or advertise at the park, contact any MCLL Commissioner. The Sponsors and Banners committee can assist with all inquiries.

Communication

Most updates will come directly from your coach. We also post announcements on our Facebook page and are working to expand communication through our new website.

Are Travel Teams or All-Star Teams Available?

MCLL occasionally fields tournament or All-Star teams for post-season play. Selection is based on performance, sportsmanship, and availability. Details are announced mid-season.
